Sunday club run 30th October 2011

Went out with the Chester Road Club on Sunday 30th. There were 5 of us and we did a fairly "lumpy" ride - the Garmin 800 reported approx 2000 feet of climbing in 60 miles. Reasonably respectable average speed of 15.2 mph (this was the moving average).

We also stopped at the Station Cafe next to Delamere railway station, which was quite pleasant. The weather was pretty good, quite warm, blue skies, and so we sat outside.

Summary of ride below.

Fast Training Ride Thursday 27th Oct 2011

Had Thursday off due to quite a lot of business travel recently (and also coming up).

Despite some rain, managed a pretty good time on my usual short training ride into North Wales.
Started the timer at the start of Lache Lane in Chester and stopped it at the same point on the way back, so I didn't time myself through the traffic of central Chester.

Summary from Garmin Connect below. I was pretty pleased with a 17.7 mph average on this course (which isn't flat by any means) at this time of year.

Chester Road Club Sunday Run 23rd Oct 2011

Nice run today through the Cheshire lanes with a stop at the Ice Cream Farm near Broxton.

Summary of ride from my Garmin 800 below:

Won't be around to go out with the Chester Road Club next Sunday as will be on a plane to Japan, so will try and get some cycling done on Thursday when I have a day off and possibly also early Saturday morning.

Garmin 800

As briefly mentioned in last week's post, I bought a Garmin Edge 800 (with navigation and performance pack) to replace my Shimano Flightdeck system which had become increasingly unreliable.

Positives so far: Easy to fit cadence/speed sensor, and device picked up heart rate monitor and cadence/speed sensor automatically.
Found out how to edit the main screen so it showed what I wanted - see below:
As you can see I picked: Total Elapsed Time, Speed, Distance, Time of Day, Average Speed, Cadence and Heart Rate. Quite easy to edit this to have whatever fields you want on.

Once I'd finished my usual short training ride from Chester to Hope and back, I went onto the Garmin website and uploaded the ride, and got a lot of information - see screenshot below:

Looks like it will be a useful little device.
Have not yet tried out the navigation features yet - will try this out at a later date.

Will use this tomorrow when I go out with the Chester Road Club on their Sunday run.

Sunday Ride with Chester Road Club

On Sunday 16th October I went out on the Sunday run with the Chester Road Club. Six of us turned up and we went through the Cheshire lanes over to Coddington (and later Cuddington) and also passed through Bangor on Dee, Malpas, Farndon and Aldford (not sure if that is the right order or not).  It was mostly flat with one or two small hills thrown in.

My cycle computer conked out but I was told we did 50 miles in around 3 hrs 10 minutes, and that was approx 5 miles before we finished. This was a reasonably brisk 15.8 mph or so. Have just ordered a Garmin Edge 800 to replace my old cycle computer which looks like it will be a good little gadget :)

I plan to go out on these Sunday rides to try and keep the bike fitness up over the winter. Will let you know how it goes. I need to fit some mudguards to the bike, so will need to go down the bike shop during the week and get some of the ones which attach to the frame (as there is not enough clearance on my frame for standard ones).

Short Training Route

After last week's epic Etape Cymru, went out on Saturday 15th Oct just for a short 20 mile ride out to Hope from Chester and back through Rossett and Doddleston. Map of route shown below:

After last weeks pretty slow time (albeit on an exceptionally hilly route) at least this was a bit more respectable at around 16.5 mph.

Planning to go out with the Chester Road Club on Sunday for 3 or 4 hours so just a short ride out today. Weather was great, blue sky, only slight wind, but a bit chilly.
